Bedside Tables and Nightstands

Like it or not, nightstands are essential for your bedroom. It's impossible to get away without a pair flanking that cozy bed. This is not only because of their increased functionality, but also thanks to the comprehensive stylish appearance that forms together with a bed. The fact that it fits together so well makes us suggest opting for a set that includes the bed and maybe some other pieces, instead of giving yourself a headache while trying to pick one that has to fit with existing furniture.
Height of a nightstand
The first and most important detail when picking a nightstand is its height. Every single nightstand has to parallel a particular line, to be more precise - the top mattress line. Let's call it the sleep line. It's important that the nightstand which is on the side of our bed to also be on the same line as we are lying in bed, so that we can easily reach the phone, turn on or off the lamp lights or place our book without much inconvenience. Time spent in bed should be relaxing and comforting, and it will be even more so with a nightstand near arms reach. Just make sure not to have too many edges near your head - either place the nightstand a few inches away from the side of the bed or look for models without corners. Safety comes first!
Storage spaceAs mentioned before, a nightstand adds functionality because it has a storage capability. It's your option if you want your books and loose items exposed in a more open construction or rather know that all the bedside necessities are hidden in multiple drawers. Another option would be the bedroom chest. One such example is the shop blue chest, designed by MASHstudios. We love its hi-gloss blue lacquer presence and the horizontal motif inspired by three roomy drawers. The industrial look is very inspiring.
Style and design of a nightstand
Traditional. As always, with traditional design we're thinking classic and aristocratic. We're looking for top quality wood and a longstanding durability. Curved lines are dominant here, with marble and stone options for the top of the nightstand. The use of these materials often offers a magnificent finish.
Contemporary. This vision is all about that distressed finish. We'll notice a preference for metal, cool edges and a special attention to function – drawers are intelligent and silent and open nightstands are very proportionately designed. Contemporary pieces are always among the favorites to steal the show.
Mid-Century Modern. Nightstands of this profile tend to have ultra clean-lines, often use quality engineered wood with veneers and accents of metal and glass. Colors are bold and commanding, balancing the visual effect of the room.
Types of nightstands
Bedside Chests. This option is used by those that require extra storage and they want what's stored to stay away from the marveling eye. Those 2 or 3 chest drawers will do the job perfectly.
Bedside Cabinets. These pieces are simply upgraded chests. The only difference is the bigger focus on functionality – here you have extra storage space thanks to the cabinet that sits below the drawer.
Nightstands. This is a different player for your bedroom. The main argument with nightstands is that looks and style are more important than functionality. We're still provided with a stand, sometimes also a drawer, of little importance, however, because our priority is the optical fascination.
MaterialsAlong with style concerns, we're also interested in the finish of our nightstand, which in turn will have an influence on our budget intentions. It's no secret that a traditional nightstand, incorporating a marble or stone top of excellent quality might represent a pricey pick, whereas a contemporary piece using recycled wood and steel, sometimes with veneer, will result in a cheap solution for the nightstand. Handcrafted pieces, using high-quality wood, like acacia, are highly recommended because you're guaranteed that it will last for many years.
Match nightstands with other furniture
Picking a nightstand has to be done with balance in mind. And we can't afford any mistakes when it comes to bedroom arrangement. This is a room where harmony has to dominate. We already named the height standards that have to be reconciled, it's also obvious that a contemporary nightstand won't fit in any way in a traditionally arranged bedroom. The easiest way is to purchase the nightstand as part of a wider bedroom set. But that doesn't mean a separately bought piece won't fit all our needs. We just have to respect some rules. One of these rules is proportion – we might not even need a nightstand in a small room because we risk asphyxiating the spaciousness of that bedroom. It would be nice of our selection to feature a storing capacity, which might be paramount in that same miniature room. The good thing is that we're not that limited in our choices: lines, shapes, and shades are important, but of equal importance is lightning. It can add a little drama and focus to our bedroom, thus enlarging our decoration playground. The ideal size of the bedside lamp is considered around 1/3 of the table size. If space is tight, a good idea would be to use wall-mounted lamps.
Summary
Nightstands serve many purposes and sometimes could prove a difficult pick for us. Its main concept though is simple: it has to complement our bedroom. To avoid mistakes it is recommended to follow an ordered approach when looking for a nightstand: we need to know its height, the quality of materials, how will it serve us, and how it will maintain the overall balance and harmony in our sleeping kingdom.
