Sofa Style Options
Traditional Style: If you’re a lover of vintage stuff, from as far back as 18th century Britain. It could be the Victorian Style Sofa, Chesterfield leather Suite or the classic sofa. If you’re going for a regal interior, you should consider the traditional styles.
Contemporary Style: The contemporary styles are mainly modified versions of pre-existing sofa styles. Their designs have been adjusted over time to fit current needs and tastes.
Mid-Century Modern Style: Although it finds its roots in the mid-20th century, the mid-century modern sofa style has stood the test of time, going out of fashion at some point and later finding its way back. On the scale of comfort and beauty, this style leans more towards the side of beauty. This is not to say mid-century sofas are not comfortable. They are, but they’re surely not the most comfortable style. That being said; they’re always a beauty to behold.
Sofa Upholstery Materials
There are a number of materials you can choose from when selecting your choice sofa. Some of the available options are leather, different kinds of fabric and faux-leather.
- Leather: If your space is expected to accommodate kids and pets, leather upholstery might be a good choice. Leather, being one of the original materials people started using as furniture upholstery, remains great option due to high durability, feel and comfort.
- Fabrics: There is a big number of different types of fabrics suitable for upholstering sofas. Below we listed the most popular fabrics used for this purpose.
- Linen: very good fabric that will create good looking appearance of the furniture. Linen is famous by its good durability characteristics and ability to keep the upholstery from discoloring. From the cons it worth mentioning that linen upholstery demands special care as it easily crumples and accumulates dirt.
- Cotton: good quality upholstery from cotton is very pleasant to touch, doesn’t crumples as easy as linen does. Durability of upholstery depends on weaving and stitching.
- Velvet: It’s one of the most expensive fabrics. If what you’re going for is in the luxury class, velvet can be your best bet. When combined with traditional style sofas, velvet fabrics give the perfect high-class look. Although expensive to maintain and procure, it definitely makes up for it in elegance. Synthetic velvets made out of cotton can be a cheaper option.
- Faux Leather: This describes the family of synthetic materials produced to feel and look like leather. This family also includes leatherette and vinyl. They are easy to clean, but not as durable as real leather. In wet climates, faux leather sofas will get sticky and cold because it absorbs humidity.
Sofa Frame Materials
As expected wooden frames are regarded as the best, hardwood frames in particular. Hardwood has a number of advantages; some of which include more durability due to its higher density and more fire resistance. However because it I can be expensive, there are other excellent options you can look to. Other types of wood that can be considered are plywood and particleboard. Plywood is also quite strong and suitable for use in sofa frames. Particleboard on the other hand is a little weak. You will do well to avoid it. This is because particleboard is made up of wood chips and fibers that are glued together.
Sofa Cushion Filling
This refers to the material inside the sofa. It determines hoe w hard, soft or how comfortable your sofa will be. Here are some of the most popular filling materials you should consider:
Foam
Most people go for foam filling. If you decide to choose a sofa with foam as its cushion filling, the results you’ll get will vary depending on the type of foam it is. Foams are majorly classified into their densities. There’s the high density foam. These ones last longer but they’re generally firmer at first use, though they get more relaxed as time goes on. Low density foams on the other hand, will be more relaxed, but they do not last as long as the high density ones.
Down
If all you want in a sofa is softness, you should consider going for one filled with feathers. They’re mostly made from duck and chicken feathers. Biggest downside of down cushion filling is that it accumulates moisture. The whole point here is; if you’re using a sofa with feather cushion filling, make sure it’s covered with waterproof material.
Polyester
If you’re on a budget, polyester may be a good choice for you. Soft polyester can be a good replacement for feathers, in case of allergies.
