What is A Platform Bed?
Basically, it is a bed, rectangular or square in shape but raised on four “legs”. The legs are joined with frames. For support of the mattress, a structure of slats is snuggly fitted across between the frames. The platform bed is considered an ordinary type while the regular bed has a slightly different design. In the latter, the mattress rests on box springs.
Ever heard of the platform shoes? Most likely you know if you probably grew up in the late 70s. Those became obsolete, sort of, until recent times when we can see young trendy girls wearing the re-invented variant. That’s fashion trends, isn’t it? There is the platform bed, a piece of furniture worthy considering for your bedroom. The platform bed with its various presentations has remained with us.
The Traditional And The Modern Platform Beds
Platform beds preceded the regular beds. The idea definitely developed from an ancient type of bed. Imagine people of old sleeping on a hard wooden or earthen, flat raised surface. Would you manage that today? Why not? The Maasai traditional bed, for instance, was known as “dafashi”. It was made of clay or wood and set in a corner of a Maasai house (enkaj*).
But today there are highly improved materials to provide the surface on which the mattress rests: plywood, hardwoods, leather etc. There are modern tools to work the wood into an exquisite design and a smooth shiny finish. Now fancy a platform bed nicely fitting in your bedroom and adding beauty to the room.
Advantages
The platform bed is simple in design. It is simple to assemble and dismantle whenever you would need to. In smaller bedrooms, it takes lesser space. Additionally it "creates" more space under it where you can store your boxes, clean shoes, and so forth. Isn’t it that worth more for those seeking to economize on space?
Disadvantages
But what about the downside? Some people fear the platform bed affects the back especially for older persons: it may be uncomfortable for them. However this is not a general rule, so you need not worry. It can be isolated and dealt with on an individual needs basis. Others feel that it looks kind of “flat”, bland, just like any flat board you would take and sleep on so long as the mattress is good. To them it looks out of place in a modern home, out of class, they’d say.
The Reason To Get Yourself One?
