A bed is piece of furniture we can’t just do without in our homes. Everyone has some form of bed or the other which they retire to after each day’s activities. More than simply serving as a platform to sleep on, a bed can represent your safe place; no matter how hectic the day has been, for a lot of people, the bed is a symbol of a few hours of peace.
Measurements
You need to know your space dimensions prior to buying your bed, so you can compare the figures with that of the beds you find on sale. You don’t want to buy a bed and later find out it’s too large for the available space. We would advise you to create some space around the bed; i.e the bed should not be too close to the walls and should not restrict movement. This is because most beds are heavy and you would find it difficult moving them around often.
Bed Types
Headboards and Frames
This type of bed can be described as very efficient, although simple. The headboard and frame are separate, giving you the freedom to select a headboard of your choice, whether you’re buying it ready-made or it will be built to your taste. This type of bed will match whatever style or design your room has. If you are designing on a tight budget, this type of bed will suit you. The bed does not conme with side rails or any additional features at the foot.
Headboards and Footboards
This type of bed has both a headboard and a footboard. It is usually designed such that both boards go together. However the overall design here is determined largely by the material used in making the boards. Most times, it easy to know which one is the headboard and which is the footboard because the headboard is larger. As expected you will need a little more space to place this type of bed.
Sleigh Beds
A sleigh bed is bigger than the two previously mentioned designs. This is because in adition to a headboard and a footboard, sleigh beds have side rails. It is only advisable to choose sleigh beds if your room is large. Mostly found in old-fashioned and classic home designs, sleigh beds are usually quite heavy and movement should be considered. The headboard and footboard often have curved shapes, hence the name.
Four-Poster Beds
Four-poster beds are perfect for rooms that are quite large. If you want your space to feel ‘less roomy’, you can go for this kind of bed. The posts at the four corners of the bed are done with some intricate design at the top, and may have some other elaborate carvings. The four posts have varied heights. A headboard is certain a four-poster bed but a footboard is optional. If used in a small space, the four-poster bed will look like a lot, because the remaining space will look so small. If you have a lot of space in your room and don’t know what to do with it, a four-poster bed can be a good choice to help make your room not fell too large.
Canopy Beds
A canopy bed is quite similar to the four-poster bed. It has posts at each corner. The difference is that these posts are connected at the top by beams. For a canopy bed, the fabric draped over the sides really determines the overall look of the bed. Other times, instead of draped fabrics, curtains can be used on the bedsides, from the connecting beams.
Platform Bed
The platform bed is a very simple and space- saving bed type. The only component is the platform which holds the bed. If you want to conserve space and maintain a very simple outlook with your bed, this is a style you should go for; simply placing your mattress on wooden slats.
Daybeds
A daybed is a two-in-one package- a sofa and a bed. If your space is really cramped, you may consider this. You can use it as your sofa in the day and as your bed by night, or the other way around depending on when you sleep. Most of the time, daybeds are made with a headboard, a footboard and a sideboard.
